The Newest Spam Trick

I hate SPAMMERS. Spam itself is rather amusing. Back when UseNet was still popular, I used to hang out in ALT.SEX.CTHULHU with the other crazies, and we’d parody spam posts. Never forget the one where some poor sod posted a survey about sex, and I answered back…

Now all Spammers are interested in is money, and they are BORING. Here’s the latest to hit the comment moderation software.

How about:

I blog frequently and I truly appreciate your content. Your article has really peaked my interest. I am going to book mark your blog and keep checking for new information about once per week. I opted in for your RSS feed too.

It links back to a travel site, trying to improve their SEO.

What’s up, just wanted to say, I liked this blog post. It was inspiring. Keep on posting!

Another SEO attempt. Website is now gone, so I’m guessing it might have been a porn site, and the ISP took it down.

I like the valuable info you provide in your articles.

I will bookmark your weblog and check again here regularly. I am quite certain I will learn lots of new stuff right here! Good luck for the next!

This one curiously didn’t have a link. When I checked the reported IP address, it came up as being from Malta, but the email address was German.

Excellent blog post. I absolutely appreciate this site. Keep it up!

Another SEO attempt. The linked page was hilarious, the writer’s first language was definitely not English.

I do not even understand how I stopped up here, however I believed this post was once good. I don’t know who you might be however definitely you’re going to a famous blogger should you aren’t already. Cheers!

Of course just about all comment spam are aimed at SEO optimization. If they actually get the odd click through, they won’t complain.

There seems to be an added desperation to the comment spam recently. I suspect that the Google Penguin update has cut into their traffic. If so, great work Google!

  1. My file formats blog gets about 20 spam comments a day mentioning the Spanish for “email list.” I won’t mention the actual Spammish words, since just mentioning them will probably trigger every spam filter there is.

But seriously, I love WordPress’s filter! It’s caught over a thousand spam comments for me, and I think it’s had just one false positive and one false negative.
