A bunch of us have been discussing book ratings…
There’s been a lot of complaints about the book rating systems on Goodreads, Amazon, and other sites. Some of these complaints have substance.
When you get a bunch of people rating something either 1 Star or 5 Stars, the odds are that they have something for or against the writer. The vast majority of books should come in at 3 Stars. Most writers just aren’t J. D. Salinger. But most writers know their craft well enough to produce something that people will read.
So that’s what we’d have to fix. We’d need to try and allow for 5,000 rabid fans, or rabid haters, rating a book.
And there might just be a way. I used to work as a programmer. One of the other people involved is currently working as a programmer. We know algorithms, and we know how to write them.
This is currently a blue sky idea. We don’t know whether we are going to try and implement it, or not.
What we would like is feedback. Suggestions anyone?
Oh, and the same basic idea should work for music, software, videos, and a bunch of other things. We think.
