There’s a rather neat sounding Canadian rock band called One Soul Thrust. They’ve got some good things going for them. Decent sound. Excellent musicianship. But…
We are not a social media company, are not working for a political organization, have not been hired to help address any balance in the major media outlets. Instead we are a group of Independents who believe that the best way to advance political discourse in Canada is to on a non-partisan basis point out when we catch ANY politician lying.
For this purpose we are searching for a team of writers who will post to newspaper comments, media forums, ICQ, MSN Messenger, Twitter, Identi.ca, Facebook pages, etc. when they catch a politician committing perjury, being deceitful, being deceptive, being delusive, being delusory, dissembling, dissimulating, double-crossing, double-dealing, equivocating, being false, falsifying, fibbing, being guileful, inventing, being mendacious, being misleading, misrepresenting the situation, misstating the situation, being perfidious, prevaricating, being shifty, being treacherous, being tricky, being two-faced, two-timing, being unreliable, untruthful, or just plain wrong.
Some people will argue that it’s impossible to find a politician that isn’t in one of the states above. We say that they are being overly pessimistic. But if one of your local candidates does have a problem with the truth, it’s better (and less expensive) that the voters find out now, and not after candidate is elected and all of their family have secured jobs in Ottawa.
Your writing needs to be strong, truthful, and you have to call a spade a spade. Inflammatory language is not always a plus, it can alienate your audience. Direct language is a plus. Indirection often leaves the reader unsure of what you are saying. Choose your language with care.
You preferably already have a known online persona. Unlike certain political parties which rumors state are running ads seeking hired guns, we are looking for real people, who are already politically active in their local communities, and who care. People who are already following political news actively, and taking part in news forums and Facebook pages several times a daily. We want people who can see the weak points in political arguments, and know how to do quick research, to quickly rebut the stupidity of the day.
Compensation: The satisfaction of knowing you’ve done your political duty by holding some politician’s feet in the political fire.
How to apply: Start writing. This is a decentralized effort that every Canadian is invited to join. The aim is to have as much fun as possible, while increasing ant-acid consumption in Ottawa ten-fold. Before this election we didn’t have the infrastructure to do this properly. This time we do. Research that you cannot do yourself, someone else probably can do, quickly and easily.
By working as a gigantic Canadian Hive Mind, we can force our Political Under Class to work to a level of openness and honesty that they’ve never had to work to before. Some of them will rise to the challenge. I have high expectations of Charlie Angus of the NDP and Tony Clement of the Conservatives. Others I expect to crash and burn, most particularly Stephen Harper and Michael Ignatief.
Feel free to join the fun. I think that this election could be very enlightening!

I’ve been sitting back watching the newest Florian Müller psycho babble play out. It always plays to the same formula. Florian Müller raises the alarm. The people who actually know what they are talking about explain why Florian is wrong. Again.
It was with great interest and mixed feelings that I watched the Harper Government fall today. While I have never liked Stephen Harper, I have a fair bit of respect for some people on his team, including Tony Clement. I also have a fair bit of respect for some people on the opposition benches including Carolyn Bennett and Charlie Angus.
It was with great amusement that I read the recent spate of stories about the Record Labels attempting to lean on the Credit Card processing companies to deny payments to music sites in places like Russia. The logic is impeccable. Cut off the money, and they’ll have to close down.
Someone made a mistake. They asked me what I wanted. Specifically they asked me what I wanted that they could buy…

My wife, the Proprietor of Moments in Time – Quilted by Heather is donating a music themed quilt to the Silent Auction being held on the Saturday night after the Banquet at FilKONtario (see the wikipedia page here for an explanation of FilKONtario, and also for an explanation of FILK).
Disclosure – if you read the FilKONtario Wikipedia entry, you’ll see my name listed as a member of the organizing committee for many years. While I no longer help run the con, my friends do, and yes, I like helping them out. I’m also the person responsible for the FilKONtario Wikipedia page. I resurrected it after deletion, fought for it’s retention, and then when I got tired of fighting a bunch of jobsworths alone, screamed for help. I got it, and the deletion commentary is now a fixed part of Wikipedia history.
All of which are side issues. The issue is the quilt.
Which is a gorgeous quilt. (full size image here).
And of course the auction is only open to attendees of FilKONtario (full size image here).
Full size image here. There will of course be a wide range of other items at the auction. In past years we’ve had classic music tapes – a copy of Julia Eclar’s Horsetamer’s Daughter went for $800.00 Canadian one memorable year. Here’s a link to the song’s lyrics, and here’s some information on the tape itself. Due to the sad dissolution of Off Centaur Publications, a lot of classic filk is no longer available. I hate licensing issues.
Full size image here. Would that be a wonderful quilt to have on your feet during a cold winter night?
Full size image here. So if you are still wavering about coming to FilKONtario, now you have another reason to come, to bid on the quilt.
Full size image here. I’ve decided that I will be attending. It comes down to a choice. Be in pain at home. Be in pain at a hotel. I’m going to hurt no matter what, and I hardly ever get out of the house, so I might as well make an exception. Besides, if the pain gets bad, I can always go lie down. Hotel rooms have beds, right?
Full sized image here. The quilt as shown is about 85% complete. Most of what remains to be done is minor detail work.

And of course it’s a one of a kind. You’ll never see another one exactly like this. Remember, FilKONtario 21, is April 1 – 3, 2011 – that’s less than three weeks away.

You just have to love Anonymous. To a shut in like myself they are a constant source of amusement. And hope. I find I agree with them on a lot of issues.
OK, I messed up. When I originally set up Weblit Canada, there were a lot of things that I didn’t know about Drupal, the content management system that I chose.
Drupal is a powerful, flexible, option filled piece of software. In fact it’s got options on it’s options. To a new user, well, this can be confusing. Very confusing.
So I thought I had the books module enabled. After all, it gave ‘Books’ to me as an option under ‘Create Content’ so that seemed like a reasonable assumption. Except the module wasn’t enabled, so rather than publishing the chapters of a book, I was publishing separate books… When I figured out that I had a problem, I went back, and after fighting with the menus, finally got ‘Books’ enabled.
Then I uploaded everything again, this time as a book. But I left the original where it was, because I’d tweeted the original locations, and had the links in a blog post. Later, when I did go back to delete it, I found out that I could have linked it to the book I had created…
Gotta love learning curves. Still I now know 200% more about Drupal than I did a week ago, and I’m starting to see some really neat things that could be done with it.
Oh, and there’s now a full six chapters of my novel Book of Honor – Book 1 – Urbema up for anyone who wants to read it. And come to think of it, I’ve got to start chasing after a cover illustration!
One final thing – GO LEAFS GO!
